Thing #11 Evaluation

Some of my favorite things included Wordle, Wordshift, Skype, and although I'm not a player, I liked Second Life. Additionally, I like Animoto! Bookr was great and useful.

Technology is always a struggle for me, so anytime I learn about all of the wonderful new technology tools I am moving in the right direction. These summer professional learning experiences update me and prepare me for the coming year. These new skills enable me to discuss, model, and share with other teachers and students the new technology resources that I've learned over the summer. This also gives me time to process the ideas and plan how to incorporate them at school.

This summers' 11.5 was the perfect number of "Things" to accomplish. Not too many not too few ...just the right amount.

Thing #11 - Digital Citizenship

Digital Citizenbship begins the first time a student works with a computer. All students should be aware of the pros and cons of computer useage, because good and bad habits start at an early age. Teachers need to start talking about being a good digital citizen from the beginning school career, and each year the talking and citizenship dialog should continue and expand.

In the early years teachers really need to talk about manners. Students need to understand how to treat computers as well as how to use computers. Students need to know how to care for the computers and to respect all related equipment.

It is very important for teachers to discuss safety in using computers. Students must know about the dangers involved with communicating on the internet. They should also be informed about the proper way to write and send messages. E-mail is really a popular form of communication and a lack of proper etiquette in e-mailing is unforgivable. Teachers need to discuss this and make sure that students are not only aware of this but adhere to the proper way of writing. Today's youth use e mail for social, educational, and professional use, so developing good writing habits start at an early age.

Thing # 10 - Virtual Worlds-Second Life

Second Life can really be beneficial to teachers and students. It is a useful source for providing students the opportunity to see past present and future in almost every subject. It takes the students on a tour and shows a tsunami develops actually showing the earthquake that causes the tsunami. Fifth grade teachers can provide the students a tour of the U.S. Holocuast Memorial. The tour has so much information and graphics helping students understand what happened to the Jewish population as the Nazis swept through Europe. The tour is not timed so the teacher can stop and start discuss or question and then continue.

There is also a New Orleans tour, which I didn't like because landmarks are not placed accurately. Some sites were at the lake and should have been downtown. This is one persons' ideas about New Orleans so in using it the students should know that it's not exact.

I had difficulty navigating but after attaching the mouse it was easier. Students probably won't share that problem and will certainly love being able to have so much information about so many subjects at their fingertips. Teachers will love this magical site but it will take some getting use to.

Thing # 9 - Slideshare

Slideshare otherwise known as "power point sharing" is very useful in education as well as the corporate world. It's difficult to keep up with what's going in the world and slideshare will help everyone meet and attain new goals and knowledge. What is being learned is both knowledge and skill in power point magic. Being able to observe and take the PPT with you to present to other groups expands knowledge and the ability to utilize power point globally.

Accomplishing screen cast required several attempts but it was worth it and each attempt brought on new problems, microphone, sound, and getting it to the blog. However, mastering the technique and remembering a couple of points will make this a useful tool in distributing
mass communication to the school.

This technology will be useful in teaching a group a new idea and installing the screen cast on computers so that all students will have the same image and delivery. Students can then proceed in follow up activities according to the instructions given by the screen cast and the teacher can assit and monitor.

Students would also enjoy creating a screen cast as using the computer with the microphone and delivering a presentation would be a good method of recording what they've learned. They can then e mail review their presentation or just present it to the class through their blog or email.

Thing 7 - Video Resources

Classroom use of videos is not a new idea but today, there are numerous electronic sources available for students and teachers to obtain videos. We use Discovery Education everyday for information in all subjects.

Videos are an easy way for students to learn and view information that is not always available. They are able to watch a video about the art of map making, soap making, or the home of the Native American Indians. We frequently need to locate a video about the early pioneers. The younger grades are always in need of videos about community helpers and American symbols. The Internet provides us with many sites that have knowledgeable, appropriate, creative videos, so it's just a matter of locating the video that fits the need.

Thing # 6 - Touch Apps

There are so many varied ways to use I Touch for teaching purposes. Using I Touch will be more interesting to the students and if available really the way to do classroom study and discovery.

Students can use the I Touch for dictionay and thesarus experience and will love the experience of learning through technology. Of course, this could be a fun game and will encourage students to use both of these fantastic writing tools when the need develops.

Social Studies students can view videos about different topics, take notes on the typing App, later students can e mail their comments to other students who have also seen the movie.

History students can use the google earth App to locate locations of battles, places where treaties have been signed or just locate important historic sites. They will also love locating the school or their own home.

If you have the I Touch students and teachers will gain from its' use.

Thing # 5 - Facebook

Facebook is the talk of the town...or even the talk of the country. This site is popular with people of all ages. Facebook provides an opportunity for people to cruise the web and get acquainted with long lost friends, visit with freinds, and relatives in other places or cities. It provides the opportunity for friends to look at photos of your recent trip or a haircut, or a new pet. This is lots of fun but everyone needs to be selective about what is place on Facebook. Since the photos never go away years from the posting date information can be retrived and used. Participants should also be careful about what is said because they can be quoted and this can be detrament to their jobs, marriage, or just plain embarrassing.

It can be a nice addition to the classroom because students can either post a real person (biography) or they create a imaginable character and invited "friends" to question or comment. This might be useful in the classroom when studying biograhies or Tall Tales.

Whatever the genre these Tubes are fun and useful.

Teacher Tube can be very helpful as teachers plan their lessons and activities for the upcoming year. It provides an opportunity to see what others are doing and possibly get new ideas for lessons. Additionally, Teacher Tube provides an opportunity to post and share ideas,photos, and activites about their own classroom adventures.
w You Tube is a tool that so many people love because they can share their everyday activities and photos with so many people. It's a great way to become famous or have your secrets become news. People post pets, their favorite moveis, or favorites from TV shows or advertisements. Jokes are posted as well as news which someone feels important. You Tube is just another way that people all over the world enjoy using and keeping up with what's going on, regardless of their location Perth, Australia or Mansura, Lousiaina.

Skype is just plain fun. It allows everyone to have a good time while learning.
skype puts everyone in a friendly place and offers opportunities to everyone to participate. It makes it possible to see other participants and their environment and brings reality into your vision.

Skype participants are able to participate in an endless number of activities. They are able to tour interesting places, meet new people, and discuss and share ideas.
Participants can demonstrate a skill, model a skill, present a play or just present a project. It would be fun to have story time and then allow for a discussion about the story.

One good feature of Skype is that participants are able to take pictures and post on their blob or Facebook. Skype is just fabulous!

Bookr is an incredible asset to students and teachers. Students will be able to crfeate a book after learning about various subjects. Bookr allows the students to be creative within certain limits The available photographs are somewhat limited but but students will still enjoy reviewing, slecting, and uploading the pictures into the book. Bookr is a great opportunity for students to review, revise, and correct their writing. It also provides a wonderful opportunity for everyone to share what they have learned about their subject.

Teachers will love Bookr for all of the above reasons plus it gives the opportunity to create special books for students who need spefic needs. That is really a plus
especially since the tools are easy to use and the finish product is easly attainable.

Students will be excited about locating photographs about their projects, they will love listening and selecting music to apply to their projects.Completed Animoto projects provide an excellent opportunity for students to share new information and projects with classmates, the school community and all of their e mail friends. This is an easy, creative, fun program to use with students of all ages. Vaughn, I used Marys' account so that I wouldn't have to wait 24 hours before being able to create an Animoto so for whatever reason my Animoto is also on her blog. Using her account let me complete Animot and go on to Bookr.

Like Wordle, students are going to love using Word Sift. The nice thing about Word Sift is that when students click on a word within posting, information about the word that has been clicked on will be provided. In some cases, pictures or maps are available. Students will really like getting instant information about words, phrases, or ideas unfamiliar to them.

It just gets better and better.

Wordle was so much fun, and actually my previous results were much prettier. Wordle will be fun for students to use in most areas of the curriculum. In social students, it will be useful in studying the colonies, Atlantic, Middle, and Southern and then listing characteristics of each area. Wordle will be useful in science when studying the planets, the human body, then environment and the way to use Wordle adapted to what the teacher wants. I love Wordle because it also is great for creativity while learning.

Students will love this method of learning. The ability to connect and learn through world wide
websites, investigation, blogging, observing ideas, making comments and assessing new information and knowledge appeals to today's students. Students will be both learners and contributors as they weave their skills, inquiries, and experiences through network experiences as they face everyday problems and situations.

This was a great exercise and everything went nicely until I attempted to attach the file. I couldn't locate the icon which would be where I attached the downloaded song, Up on the Housetop. Vaughn just said, "Give it up."

I did enjoy doing this and feel better about showing this to "someone."

Thing -#23- Summarize

I am very happy to have completed "23 Things". I worried about completing this task and felt like a thunder cloud was following me around until I completed the assignments. It was not easy to complete. Mary and I worked on 23 Things for many days and many many hours. Mary was great and helped me get through the swamp and quicksand.

What are some favorite discoveries or exercises you experienced?

Flickr was a favorite because it can very useful and easy to use. Access to photographs will be useful for teachers and students in all areas of the curriculum. Flickr offers the opportunity to obtain the pictures and then incorporate the shots into your own computer collection and use them when needed. The procedure for getting the pictures and shaving them is easy to do which makes Flickr more valuable.

Even though Podcast was filled with earthquakes and volcanoes, I enjoyed making a photo story.
This was not really difficutl to do but there were so many steps it was easy to get confused and not know where to next. Getting the music, was fustrating because there were so many irrelant questions to answer, blanks to type in your address, and e mail, and school information. The final product even though it was not perfect was complete and that spells success.

How has this progress assisted or affected you?

23 Things has really broadened my computer knowledge. Some "Things" will continue to be useful and become part of my computer repitore other "Things "will be stored. It will be so very nice to know and understand the topic when someone is discussing one of the "23 Things that are not part of my daily life.

This is another site for teachers who need to collaborate with other professionals about a special project or event. I like the ability to plan and prepare for an event with people who share common goals but who are not in the same physical environment. It's just another way to get the job done in an efficient manner using modern day technology to accomplish your goals.

Thing - #20 Explore You Tube & Teacher Tube

A picture is worth a thousand words and that's why both of these are great sites for general users and especially for teachers. I love to search through these looking for subjects that I like to read about. Teachers will have to be careful when using these because language is just not proper.

The videos and information on Teacher Tube are made by teachers and for classroom instruction. It's so helpful to be able to use video information as part of teacher. There are many ways to do it, but using the video in its entirety or using video segments that are important to the classroom instruction are both easily done. Students will be able to hear and see the information presented in a creditable, sequential, and timely manner. Often the students will be able to watch and and hear emotional reactions to actual historical and cu rent events. The video can be stopped, (while ideas or events are discussed) started, and replayed depending on what the needs of the instruction requires.

The narrator says a few sentences at the beginning to set up the time, setting, and what is happening. Teachers can integrate this into their lesson about hurricanes and the students will love this video.

There are so many interesting and informative sites on Thing # 19. This is one where
you want to spend some extra-curricular timelearning about the many sites.

Teachers, students, and librarians will find the Google.Maps and Live Maps useful. It has all of the basics, and is very easy for the students to use. The Live maps offers a collection which features brief annotation about the site. This will be asset when teaching geography in all grades.
The Birds Eye view offers many ways of looking at neighborhoods, streets, high rise buildings, Minate Maid Park and sky high views of the city. The best part is that using the compass & tools on the left hand margin the user can rotate the map in any direction and even look down from a building. Can't be afraid of heights! Find the Houston Public Library! Use the tilt tool for fun.
Use the rotate tool and see the back.

Two other sites that will be useful to all educators are the LuLu and Biblio. LuLu features information about all of books but also allows users to create books on line. Books can be created and then to LuLu for publishing. Our school has a book writing event annually, so this allow a nice place for our students to visit and realize that publishing can be discovered in many ways, not just through a conventional publisher. This is such a great place for people who love to write can publish their work and get comments from readers. Barnes and Nobles must be checking out this site. Biblio is a good source for finding out of date or rare books. The search is divided into categories such as binding in good condition, by country, author,title, or language. Again, teachers and librarians will be able to use this to purchase books, or just to show students where
to locate books that are difficult to find.

Free! Free! What a nice concept? And so easy to use! Google. Docs is a great option and is perfect for beginners. Because of the simplicity, teachers will like using Google.Docs to familiarize students with learning how to develop document. There are not as many choices regarding font, size, lines, and bullets. I could not locate a thesaurus but spell check is available. Actually, most items that we are accustom to using on word are available, we just have to browse Google.Doc for their location. The bottom line is that this on line source is free and most of the tools that we need are available.

Open Office is another one of those great free on line productivity tools. It is a very nice program which has more options to offer than Google. Docs but not as much as Microsoft Word. Of course Microsoft Word has a fee so you're paying for the increase choices.. Open Office quality falls between Microsoft Word and Google.Doc. Users can create nice documents using on line productivity tools, however if accustom to using Microsoft Word, some fustration will develop when using the other two because of options that are missing and not being familiar with the programs. Open Office has the ability to develop a power point but the program on Microsoft is more expansive.

Rollyo is really a tool for teachers and librarians. The rollyo is a means of pulling all the web sites together about a particular subject and making the information more accessible for both the students and teachers. In this case the teacher or librarian will create the rollyo and the students are the ones who will use the rollyo to pull up the web site and view the information. All the web sites about birds will be together and the student uses a search term to pull out the information he needs from the rollyo. A great spot for students to collect information in a efficient manner.

This is a very nice skill to learn and use. I can see lots of use of wikis in business and schools.
It will be especially wonderful for teachers as they road map. Students can use the wiki for commenting on a novel which the class has shared. Students can use the wiki for voting for government offices and also for Bluebonet Award books. The students can also have fun listing their favorite books and authors.

I read three sites talking about this new library world, and David Warlick makes its sound so simple. His list of ways to develop into a 2.0 library is understandable and is mostly common sense. Many ideas such as delegating, scheduling meetings, experimenting in the classroom, blogging , reading books about the topics are all things that we do. We all need his vision and commitment to making the library a place where technology can be used and enjoyed and benefit worldwide education.

Technorati is simple to use and opens up the entire world for us to meet, greet, discuss, and obtain new ideas about everything. The subjects are anything you can think of and the ideas about these subjects are reflections of people globally. It is interesting to note that the popular topics deal with politics and the world of entertaining.
Tagging is easy for most of us, and since there are not any rules mandating how to tag, anything can be entered. There will allot of overlap in tagging but as long as people can locate their information this method should work.
After looking at School Library Learning 2.0 on several different searches, it was obvious that each was different but shared a few of the same postings. The videos were all posted on each search. Two searches might share a similar posting but general each site was different.

Thing -#13 Social Bookmarking

The Common Craft video was very helpful. It presented the information in an easy to understand way with just three important steps. These steps were discussed and illustrated and then repeated at the end of the video. It's great for people who are new to this skill because it actually shows how to do the steps.

The Del.icio site was easy to use and I know that teachers will utilize and rely on this site as they grow in the use of technology in everyday teaching. There are so many web sites on every subject, Del.cio and others like it will help teachers organize their favorite sites and make them be available on demand. That's important, we all have sites that we like but frequently cannot locate them or remember their address. This bookmarking site will be a real treasure to teachers and students.

Ma.gnolia is a great spot for storing web sites. It's a very pretty nicely designed site that has special features in addition to the regular format. These include the right to have privacy, it allows for rating the web sites, it has a spot for creating an avatar (some are free) and it allows for groups and group discussions.

Teachers and students can and will enjoy using many of these features.

Learning about American glass companies is an interesting topic. So I went through the listings and after studying the listings I selected" Early American Press Glass. " The title says it all, but upon opening the site, I discovered that there was not enough information provided about the history of American glass. I felt like this would be a good site because several companies were listed so I thought these would be discussed and examples would be included. Unfortunately, the site features only a select number of patterns and provides only a few details about these patterns. The site does permit the individual pattern to be enlarged for illustrating the small details of the glass which is nice for those patrons who are interested.

New Orleans is always and interesting spot to read and learn about. I looked into a blog titled Welcome to Southern Lagniappe. This is a beautifully manicured site, with beautiful photographs, legible type, and interesting informationabout a recent trip to New Orleans. The blog explores a bit of New Orleans as she prepares to leave the city. Additionally, the writer has posted other information about her favorite places to visit, her favorite books and authors, and her favorite online spots.

There are many blogs about New Orleans, but it was a combination of the blog title and her type that interested me in her blog.

Thing # 12 "Creating Community through Communicating"

An important item to remember when blogging is to have something meaningful to say about the blog and to be sure that your statement relates to the subject of the blog. It's great to share ideas but it's important to focus on the statement and to expand on the idea that was presented. After discussing the idea it is then nice to give a personal opinion or site an experience but these should be relevant to the initial idea presented in the blog. Asking questions and comments are only great if they relate to the subject being discussed.

At school, I could post a blog about a book and invite students to comment. Posting a commet would encourage the children to think about their ideas about the book, it would help them with their technology skills in commeting about the blog, and of course it would help their writing skills as they learn to write a statement about my comments about the book. It would teach students to write a meaningful passage about a narrow subject.

We can all improve our writing by following the 10 guidlines for writing blogs.

This library site could be considered an accessory. The site offers many luxury items for users who have time to browse and look for interesting information. There is tons of information for someone who has the time to look for specifics, like the top ten books and authors or the top ten reviews about various books. At school, students could use this for obtaining reviews about books they are going to read or for suggested books. It would also be fun for them to use for adding their own books to their own library. They can add comments about their readings, rate by stars, and add words for tags. This will be fun and educational for students plus adding to their technology skills.

Using comics and their characters are fun. We can all enjoy using this tool for many different things. It would be perfect for making cards for all occasions to share with friends and family. In the classroom, it would be useful for students as they make cards for all "Red Letter Days " but especially for that very special day in May, Mothers Day. Teachers are busy in May and having this tool available will allow the students to make a special card for Mom in an easy fun way.

Social Studies teachers could use this as a means of expressing political satire by having students make cards showing political campaign slogans or expressions. Science is a great spot for students to make cartoons or signs showing save the earth slogans or encouraging everyone to go "Green" .

There is a special place for using the comics in every area of the curriculum and the best part is the students and teachers will love using this tool. I love this idea I love the trading card idea. Everyone will love learning about a particular subject, making cards, and trading the cards they have created. It will be useful in every subject.
Science teachers will love it to help with landforms, planets, and simple machines. Students can make the cards, present the information to the class, trade cards, and of course, quiz each other about the information they have learned.

In the library, students can make trading cards for the books they have read. We could make a chart showing the various cards students have made. A picture book, a non -fiction, and a easy book chart would be useful for the students as they learn about different books and authors.
These trading cards will easily convert into book markers for student and teacher use.

Thing 9-Blog Searching

The format of the blog site is important. Students are able to use sites that are plain and simple. Topix was such a site. Captions, print, and images were crisp and clear. This site was also easy to search. This site let the user answer right away after reading the blog.

I didn't like Syndic8 because it was too structured,boxed in, and difficult to locate the topic that you need. I did like the flags which told the user right away where to go for the different countries.

Google Blog Search was wonderful and easy to use because students can enter a one word search and there will be many listings. The blog also tells how current the information is. It nprovides an introductory sentence which will tell students if they're on the right path.

This is my favorite! It will be great in every situation school, business, or home. It's always so much fun looking through all of the sites, and adding them to your own blog reader is just a real time saver. It will also prevent the loss of a site that is a favorite and then in time the correct spelling or name of the site is forgotten. Adding the site to your blog reader will guarantee the ability to locate favorite sites.

Thing 8-RSS Feeds

I like quotes, so I added the Daily Quotes subscription. Newspaper articles will be a nice addition to my Google site and teachers who have their own RSS sites will also find this useful as well. New information that is posted will be great to discuss with students on an as needed bases.

When studying a particular unit or subject teachers will rejoice at the ability to have RSS information for immediate use. Our second graders study birds each year and this will enable the classes to read currently articles that are published.

Library use of RSS will be useful for students doing research because the information is new and students will be exposed to unread material which can be incorporated into their work. It also adds another dimension to library and school technology.

Thing 7-Google

Google is heaven!
Google Earth is just a little bit of more heaven. A bit on the scary side too. I love being able to locate well known sites and visiting them via the web. Classes will love this when studying anything because it can be fused into any subject. Students will love locating where various authors lived, or the setting of the Harry Potter books. It will be useful in science locating volcanoes or famous mountains, and the list can go forever.

I enjoyed creating my own home page with I Google as looking through the various options was fun and I liked my finished product. Teachers and students are able to do the same once they become acquainted with this easy to use too.

Thing #6 - Mashups

This is a great tool and fun to do. I can see how this would be very useful to students who are studying maps and geography. Trading cards will be useful in all content areas but would especially useful in geography when combined with map study.

Creating the Flickr mosaic was interesting. Students will love creating these as there are pictures on almost any subject. Looking throught the files will be educational and fun, then incorporating these mosaics into their presentation will provide a positive experience as they present or display their work to the class.

This is a great skill, all I need is practice and some photos of my own (or some I can borrow) to download. This will certainly be useful for students as they research and make power points for presenting to the class.
I would like it for my personal use as I do love pictures from special events that can be shared with family and friends who live all over the world.

So this really is a very useful skill and I will enjoy it very much.

This morning was very productive as I learned about what is going to happening this summer.
I read, looked, and listened to the tutorials about the Web 2.0 (23things) that I will be doing for the next few weeks. The life long learning was a good start and it helped me to know where I need work. After thinking about what I need to accomplish I wrote a few goals with a time line and am ready to go.

Setting up and registering my blog was a new experience for me. Geaux blogging! Now I am waiting for some responses.

Creating an avatar was like playing with paper dolls with accessories of the 21 century. There were so many choices and after adding, deleting, and playing around I just settled for an image that I thought was just OK. It's cute but could have been better. This is fun to work with and students will love doing this for class projects. Can't you just see what they could create after reading A Wrinkle in Time?
